เครื่องวัดแก๊สชนิดพกพา เป็นชนิดที่คนทำงานสามารถพกติดไว้กับตัวได้ เหมาะกับการตรวจวัดแก๊สพิษ หรือแก๊สที่มีอันตรายต่อชีวิตและทรัพย์สิน ในขณะที่คนงานกำลังปฏิบัติงานในพื้นที่เสี่ยงหรือพื้นที่อับอากาศ ซึ่งจะแตกต่างจากเครื่องมือวัดแบบติดตั้ง โดยตัวเครื่องสามารถตรวจวัดแก๊สในระยะเริ่มต้นได้ เช่น แก๊สที่ติดไฟได้ ซึ่งอาจอยู่ในอากาศและอาจเกิดการระเบิดได้ และแก๊สพิษที่ก่อให้เกิดผลเสียต่อร่างกายมนุษย์ โดยสามารถนำตัวเครื่องไปวัดโดยเฉพาะเจาะจง หรือทำการสุ่มวัดบางจุดก็ทำได้ และยังสามารถวัดค่าออกซิเจน ที่มีผลต่อการหายใจของมนุษย์ได้อีกด้วย ซึ่งเครื่องชนิดนี้ มีทั้งรุ่นที่เป็น Single Channel และ Multi Channel สามารถวัดแก๊สได้หลากหลานขึ้นกับความต้องการของลูกค้า
